Recent research shows that Vincent Van Gogh lost part of his ear in a drunken violent fight with his best friend Paul Gauguin, who was another leading post-impressionist. Since Van Gogh had an unsightly personal life without romantic episodes, the art historians romanticized this episode as if he cut his ear and made a gift to a prostitute that he was in love with. No matter which story anyone will believe, or if he was insane, he is still one of the titans of our civilization.
